In November 2025, the Home Secretary published a long policy statement covering a range of plans for amending the asylum system. She went on to launch a related consultation on 'earned' settlement, a proposal to change the length of time a new arrival to the UK must wait before they can apply for an immigration status known as indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or settlement, that allows newcomers to stay here indefinitely without having to keep renewing their visa.
You can read our MY briefing on the latest asylum and 'earned' settlement announcements. It's a very short overview that might be helpful if you're updating others in your service area.
