The Office for National Statistics (ONS) conducted research into the lived experiences of Roma people in England and Wales. This study was led by the Inclusive Research team within the ONS’s Centre for Equalities and Inclusion, in partnership with Migration Yorkshire, Roma Support Group, and the University of Sheffield.
To help shape the research, ONS formed two advisory groups, which included Roma community members, Civil Society Organisations, academics, and policymakers.
The study used a qualitative, participatory, peer-research approach, incorporating in-depth interviews and focus groups with Roma communities. Interviews with service providers also formed part of the evidence. It aimed to gather meaningful insights into Roma people’s experiences and needs across key areas such as health, education, employment, housing, and access to public services.
The findings provide evidence that could help inform future policy decisions. They may also support the interpretation of existing statistics and contribute to developing approaches that enhance the visibility and representation of Roma people in data.
