Research project: the role of religion

Archive page

Project title  Deriving meaning in transition: the role of religion for refugees and asylum seekers.
Research type  Doctoral research project
Timescale 3 years - started 2008

Project summary

The research project aims to explore:

  • how young people, in particular refugees and asylum seekers, search for and establish meaning at transitional stages in their lives, and
  • the role of religion in supporting or shaping their experiences.

The project will focus on the 16-25 age range of different groups who have formed some connection with religious communities within the Yorkshire and Humber region. It will address an identified gap in research, exploring religion in refugees and asylum seekers and its importance in their search for meaning and for their psychological, spiritual and practical wellbeing. This will in turn contribute a new perspective on community cohesion.

This research project is a result of collaboration between Migration Yorkshire and Leeds Metropolitan University that successfully bid for funding from AHRC / ESRC Religion and Society Youth Call programme http://religionandsociety.org.uk/
