Policy update March 2019

An overview of the latest statistics, policy and research on migration issues affecting partner organisations in Yorkshire and Humber.

A summary of the report is:

  • UK net migration is stable at 283,000. A diverging trend has occurred between non-EU and EU net migration since the EU referendum.
  • Arrivals across the Channel have become a new issue.
  • The post-Brexit immigration system is being developed through a White Paper and new Immigration Bill.
  • There have been 150,000 applications to the EU settlement scheme through pilots as of the end of February. Of those 135,000+ processed, none have been refused. The main scheme will open for all applicants on 30 March. 
  • Asylum contracts have been announced for the next decade.
  • Next steps on the government’s Integrated Communities Strategy include an Action Plan with specific activities around migration.
