Description

Outline

South Yorkshire Refugee Law and Justice [SYRLJ] is a locally led and run, non-political and non-denominational group of volunteers. Its members include lawyers, students, people experienced in the asylum field and those who are new to it. Some are refugees.

SYRLJ aims to:

  • Promote greater equality of access to quality legal resources in asylum cases in South Yorkshire.
  • Further the direct participation of interested people in the asylum process.
  • Share and communicate knowledge of the experience of refugees in the UK, and provide education about the asylum determination process.

What does SYRLJ do?

  • Trains volunteers. Anyone is welcome to volunteer, and through its training programme SYRLJ aims to integrate practical experience of the asylum process with academic knowledge and legal skills.
  • Helps refugees collate evidence to support fresh claims and appeals by researching social, political and other relevant conditions in their country of origin.
  • Gives advice and help with asylum claims where asylum seekers cannot get legal representation.
  • SYRLJ has accreditation from the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner  [OISC]

SYRLJ is working with local and regional organisations which support, advise and campaign for refugees and asylum seekers.
