WomenCentre

Description
OutlineWomenCentre is a charity that provides a wide range of woman-centred services to improve the safety, wellbeing and quality of life for women; it supports marginalised women to access health, social and learning services. The services are open to all women.
WomenCentre works across Calderdale and Kirklees, with centre-based services at Halifax, Huddersfield and Dewsbury and a number of outreach services in local communities. The services are individualised and gender-sensitive to enable women to make significant differences in their lives. WomenCentre offers specialist mental health and wellbeing services for women seeking asylum, refugees and new migrants in Kirklees.
Specialist services for women migrants include:
Women in Exile: a drop in space that supports women seeking asylum, refugees and new migrants. We recognise women’s lives are affected by a range of issues including:
- Barriers of access
- Challenges with immigration policies
- Difficulties with displacement and hostile environments
- War, persecution, sexual violence, torture and the death or disappearance of loved ones
Working with a local food bank, we often distribute bread and baked goods at the drop-in and we have a clothes exchange for women and their children . Central to this work is bridging across communities, breaking down barriers of marginalisation and increasing resilience.
Women Together: offers therapeutic group work and a creative environment to women migrants, working alongside women from minority ethnic backgrounds to support each other and work together to:
- reduce their isolation
- find different ways for their voices to be heard in the wider communities
- make sense of their lives and experiences
- produce and share resources
Talk English: offers a space to learn English and improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. This project is run in partnership with Paddock Trust.
