Third country national
A migrant from outside the EEA.
 
Tier 1
Tier 1 of the Points-Based System is the route for highly skilled migrants, investors and entrepreneurs to come to the UK from a non-EU country.
 
Tier 2
Tier 2 of the Points-Based System is the route for skilled migrants from outside the EU who have a job offer in the UK from an employer who is a licensed sponsor and where the job cannot be filled by a settled worker. Tier 2 also includes ministers of religion, sportspeople and employees of multinational companies with a branch in the UK.
 
Tier 4
Tier 4 of the Points-Based System is the main route for international students to come to the UK from a non-EU country.
 
Tier 5
Tier 5 of the Points-Based System is the route for temporary workers to come to the UK from a non-EU country. This covers, for example: sportspeople, entertainers, religious workers and charity workers. Tier 5 also includes a 'youth mobility' scheme for young people from specified countries.
 
Trafficking
The process of moving a person from one country to another in order to exploit them. Exploitation may mean forced labour, prostitution or other practices similar to slavery.
