Description

Outline

BEACON seeks to address the varied needs of asylum seekers who find themselves in the Bradford district. It is an ecumenical Christian response to the biblical injunction to welcome the stranger; it works with other faith groups and secular agencies to offer care and support to asylum seekers. It aims to encourage and enable the contributions of asylum seekers to the wider community.

BEACON's current projects are:

  • McKenzie Friends are trained volunteers who provide moral support and informed help for those, without access to legal representation, appealing against asylum decisions at Phoenix House, the Asylum Hearings Centre at Thornbury, or wishing to make a fresh claim.
  • CHAT [Care and Hospitality at Thornbury]
  • CHAT Phoenix House Volunteers offer a warm welcome and simple refreshments to asylum seekers waiting for their appeals to start at Phoenix House.
  • CHAT English Club Asylum seekers and other non-native speakers can practise their conversational English in a friendly environment. Open to all abilities. Wednesdays 10.00am – 12.00 noon at Touchstone, 32 Merton Road, BD7 1RE.
  • BEACON Hosting Project Offers short, medium and sometimes longer term accommodation within the homes of volunteer hosts to asylum seekers who are destitute or who have critical housing needs.
  • BEACON Campaigning Campaigns on asylum issues and awareness raising.
